Australia has transitioned from an economy based on physical resources, to one in which quality talent is the prime asset.

While some professional services firms have found opportunity in this new economy, many others are struggling, specifically with new and unique challenges around retaining clients, managing and leading talent and knowing how to chase opportunities.

"Many professional services firms struggle to properly understand their clients' needs, which they are critically dependant on," says Melbourne Business School Professor of Marketing Don O’Sullivan.

"With our new approach, we look at what aspects of management practices have remained relevant and which practices need to be redeveloped for this new environment."

To coincide with the World Business Forum in Sydney this month, Professor O'Sullivan and Professor of Strategy Vivek Chaudhri will hold an evening masterclass on the changing nature of leadership in professional services firms on May 31 at Stone and Chalk.

One of the biggest points of conversation on the night will be the issue of trust, which is front of mind for almost every Australian organisation in the wake of the Financial Services Royal Commission.

"Trust means something different in a professional services environment," says Professor O'Sullivan.

"Because the customer doesn’t know whether your product is good or not, nor if they even need it, they’re entirely reliant on you. Trust then becomes the fundamental economic resource from the point of attracting and maintain client relationships to attracting and maintaining talent."

Professor O’Sullivan teaches marketing and brand management on our MBAExecutive and Senior Executive MBA programs, as well as the General Management and Advanced Management executive education programs.

Professor Chaudhri, who is speaking at the World Business Forum, is a strategy adviser to the CEO of CSL and MD of Grannus Securities, and teaches on our Executive and Senior Executive MBA programs.
