The Master of Organisational Leadership is a leadership focused degree, supported by essential business foundations.

Students complete a core cohort Authentic Leadership subject, a suite of leadership electives, and a selected set of business-focused subjects designed to build commercial awareness and strategic context.

Course Structure

Students will complete The Authentic Leader core subject as a cohort experience and then choose from three Leadership Electives and four General Management Electives. Then customise your degree even further by selecting an additional 2 subjects – you can choose 2 subjects from either the Leadership or General Management electives. Alternatively, you can select one subject from each elective stream.

12 subjects in total. 12.5 credit points per subject. 150 credit points total required to complete the program.

The Authentic Leader – Leadership of Self and Teams (12.5 credit points)

This subject builds insight into personal leadership style and uses this to enhance impact and effectiveness.

Drawing on organisational behaviour theory, students will explore individual personality differences, factors influencing motivation and job satisfaction, and successful communication in the workplace.

Leadership Electives

Negotiations (12.5 credit points)

Negotiation is the art and science of securing agreements between two or more interdependent parties.

Discover why people and organisations behave the way they do in competitive situations and come to understand the broad spectrum of negotiation problems faced by managers and professionals in a global context.

Leadership and Change (12.5 credit points)

Critically explore the changing notions of leadership in today's global business environment.

You will develop new insights about your own leadership capabilities and learn how to influence and lead with more impact through the experiential processes of the class.

Managerial Judgement (12.5 credit points)

As we form judgments and make decisions, we fall prey to predictable and consistent errors that can impact the quality of our decisions and escalate conflict.

Learn the tried and true remedies and the newer methods that can be applied to mitigate your errors in judgment and improve your overall managerial and leadership style.

Managing People (12.5 credit points)

Acquire the analytical skills to identify, diagnose and solve people-related challenges in organisations.

You will use tools to examine different theoretical concepts and perspectives that underlie behaviour to improve organisational, group and individual outcomes in a practical manner.

Leadership Electives

Students will select three Leadership Elective subjects as part of the Master of Organisational Leadership program.

General Management Electives

Corporate Finance (12.5 credit points)

Hear from CFOs and look through their eyes on the big financial questions facing firms to discover how finance supports but also constrains strategy.

You will learn about how finance supports the implementation of strategy through the capital budgeting and project evaluation process, risk management policies, strategies and instruments (options, swaps, futures, etc.), different ways of financing the firm, and the important issues in working capital.

Financial Accounting (12.5 credit points)
Learn to interpret and analyse financial statements in order to extract useful information for better decision-making and assessing the financial health of an organisation.
Finance (12.5 credit points)
Establish a solid foundation for valuing financial assets and selecting and managing investment projects. You will discover how to manage a firm to increase the wealth of shareholders, subject to fulfilling contractual and legal obligations to relevant stakeholders.
Data Analytics (12.5 credit points)

Gain the core skills to extract information from data in order to understand business processes and make better managerial decisions.

You will learn quantitative analysis, analytical thinking and ways to measure and improve performance, which will build a framework for solving complex business problems and the foundation for advanced MBA subjects.

Marketing (12.5 credit points)

Learn to manage market demand using proven demand‐side strategies.

You will learn to recognise, create, grow and protect market‐based assets that influence demand and how marketing investments help develop and translate market‐based assets into outcomes that ensure an organisation’s long‐term survival and success.

Brand Management (12.5 credit points)

Open your mind to the challenges of building, protecting and strengthening a brand.

You will take an applied approach to examining how to manage a brand, including the research, strategy and architecture that goes into developing a brand and ways to build, position and extend a brand as found in B2B, consumer and luxury retail brand strategies.

Consumer Behaviour (12.5 credit points)

At its essence, marketing and business more broadly is an attempt to influence consumer behaviour.

Discover how to use insights from behavioural economics, psychology, sociology, and anthropology to understand and predict consumer behaviour, using behavioural science to maximise marketing impact.

Corporate Strategy (12.5 credit points)

Leaders need to make decisions regarding firm boundaries and capital allocation, which require decisive rules for expansion and divestments.

Discover the frameworks and tools for making decisions regarding geographic, vertical and horizontal scope of the firm, and delve into the concepts of synergy and corporate advantage, ultimately equipping yourself to identify strategically valuable resources and develop strategies for winning in multiple businesses by leveraging those resources.

Implementation of Strategy (12.5 credit points)

Analyse the structural and behavioural issues that render an organisation’s strategy ineffective.

You will understand how the issues arise and learn ways to overcome them so that the organisation can achieve competitive advantage.

Innovation (12.5 credit points)

Across two intensive weekends, introduce yourself to the concepts and techniques for innovating in small and large firms as you develop an innovation project.

Harness your creativity and skills in strategy, marketing and operations to work on a hands-on team project, where you must develop an entrepreneurial business idea and pitch it to a panel of industry judges.

Operations (12.5 credit points)

Discover the tools and frameworks to understand the role that the operations function plays in a firm’s ability to compete effectively in the marketplace.

You will focus on the design, management and continuous improvement of the business processes that help firms exceed customer expectations along measures such as cost, quality, flexibility and innovation.

General Management Electives

Students will select six General Management Elective subjects as part of the Master of Organisational Leadership program.

Capstone

Managerial Project (12.5 credit points)

Capstone

Students will complete one Capstone project as part of the Master of Organisational Leadership program.

The Capstone is equivalent to 25 credit points.

Program Fee

The program fee for 2026 is $5,308 per subject (12.5 credit points equivalent).

Fees are paid per subject, per term in advance*.

* Fees are subject to annual review and may increase annually. The School guarantees that fees will not increase by more than 10 per cent from year to year.

FEE-HELP

FEE-HELP is available for eligible Australian citizens.

Eligible Indigenous students study fee-free.

Entry Requirements

Admissions Criteria

To be considered for entry into this course, you must have:

  • An undergraduate degree OR a minimum of six (6) years of documented full-time professional experience

AND

  • At least three (3) years of documented full-time managerial work experience.

You must submit:

  • An up-to-date curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Evidence of all qualifications completed and incomplete including academic transcripts with grading schema
  • A valid passport or verified document showing current citizenship / residency status

Please note:

  • This course is only open to domestic students (Australian/NZ citizens, Australian PR visa holders, or any Australian visas without study restrictions).
  • FEAL students are not eligible to enrol in this program.
English Language Requirements

All applicants to the University of Melbourne must satisfy the English language requirements. This may be achieved in a number of ways, including recognised previous study taught and assessed entirely in English or an approved English language test.

If you need to undertake an English language test, you must meet one of the scores below:
