Melbourne Business School welcomes new Board Member
The former President and CEO of Rio Tinto Minerals, Dr Xiaoling Liu has been appointed to the board of Melbourne Business School.
Dr Liu has extensive experience in the mining sector in Australia and the US, most notably at Rio Tinto Minerals, a division of Rio Tinto that supplies 30 per cent of the world’s refined borates with revenues of more than US$670 million.
Prior to this, Dr Liu held various president and general management roles and worked as a research scientist for 10 years at the Comalco Research Centre in Melbourne. She has a PhD in Extractive Metallurgy at the Imperial College in London, UK and is a current board member of Newcrest Mining Limited Australia and of Iluka Resources Ltd.
Chairman of Melbourne Business School Ross Baker said Dr Liu was the latest in a long-line of Australian business leaders to serve on the School’s board of directors.

“Our board brings together business leaders and academics, and our unique governance model ensures that the School’s programs develop the knowledge and skills Australian and global businesses demand, while meeting the highest academic standards.”
The School’s 17 board members hail from a range of industries and companies including Starpharma Holdings Limited, Ernst & Young, Belgravia Group, Bank of Melbourne, Tennis Australia, ASPEN Group Ltd, Carlton & United Breweries, Cricket Australia, Ericsson and Sussan Group.
Melbourne Business School Dean, Professor Zeger Degraeve, said the School’s diverse faculty, student and alumni community looked forward to welcoming Dr Liu.
“Xiaoling is unique, being an Australian citizen of Chinese heritage who brings significant expertise in research along with senior executive experience across four continents to our School,” Zeger said.
“At Melbourne Business School, we pride ourselves on the global diversity of our thinking and people and look forward to welcoming Xiaoling to the MBS community.”
Dr Liu said she was excited by the opportunity to contribute to education and share her experience with a non-profit organisation.
“I’ve had a lifelong passion for education and I’m looking forward to being able to apply my knowledge and skills to contribute to the ongoing success of Melbourne Business School,” Dr Liu said.
