Part-time MBA Application Process and Selection Criteria FAQs

What are the application deadlines?

There are four intakes per year. Applications are assessed on a rolling basis. Please refer to the Part-time MBA application deadlines.

Is there an application fee?

No, there is no application fee associated with the Part-time MBA application.

If my application has been unsuccessful, may I reapply in the future?

Unsuccessful applicants may reapply for a later intake, if there has been a change to their application profile.

Please exercise your own judgement in deciding if you have any significant changes in your new profile since your first application that will make a difference with the Admissions Committee.

A new application is required for consideration.

When will I hear if my application has been successful?

Outcomes are typically communicated via email within four weeks of receiving a complete application.

Can I defer my admission?

You may apply to defer, for up to 12 months. A separate deferral form is required.

How can I strengthen my Part-time MBA application?

The Committee looks for four main competencies in your application - academic capacity, the ability to contribute and work effectively in teams, career progression and leadership potential.

Can I apply if I don't have an undergraduate degree?

Applicants who have not completed an undergraduate degree, will need to have at least six years of documented professional full-time work experience when they apply for the program.

If you have an undergraduate degree, you will need at least two years full-time documented professional full-time work experience.

On average, Part-time MBA students have around 10 years of work experience.

Do I need business related work experience to apply?

Our MBA students come with diverse backgrounds, from public and private sectors and for-purpose organisations.

Business-related work experience is valued and it will help you contribute to the classroom discussions.

MBS values experience in various industries and roles, as long as it showcases relevant skills and leadership potential.

How many years of work experience do I need to be admitted?

Applicants must have professional full-time work experience at the time of application. Candidates with an undergraduate degree require a minimum of two years of documented experience, while those without a degree require at least six years. On average, Part-time MBA students bring around 10 years of work experience.

What types of references do you accept?

Your references should be individuals you have worked with closely over an extended period. References should not include family members, close friends, or personal acquaintances. Some examples of referees include your current manager, former manager, senior colleague, client or business partners.

I'm an international student, can I apply for the Part-time MBA program?

No, this program is not CRICOS registered for international students requiring a student visa.

What career support do Part-time MBA students receive?

Part-time MBA students can meet with their designated career coach at any point of their program. They receive and monthly career services newsletter, can attend all company presentations, have their own career services workshops and webinars and CANVAS career course.

Part-time MBA Course Information FAQs

What is the duration of the Part-time MBA program?

On average, the Part-time MBA students have the flexibility to structure the program to suit their lifestyle. Students may choose to accelerate by increasing the workload and finish all subjects within two and a half years.

Are there opportunities for international exposure?

Yes, the School offers an exchange program. Students can choose to exchange at our partner schools. The Melbourne Business School currently has exchange partnership agreements with 52 institutions across 23 countries or regions. Students can include a maximum of 50 credit points from the exchange program. More information can be found on our MBA Exchange Program page.

What is the cost of the Part-time MBA program?

The 2026 tuition fee for the Part-time MBA is $5,308 per subject (12.5 credit points equivalent)*. There are scholarships available. For further information, please refer to the Investment section of the Part-time MBA page.

How intensive is the coursework?

The course starts with an intensive Leadership subject that is taught across two and a half days.

Standard terms are 10-weeks long and students may enrol in one or two subjects in any standard term, classes in standard terms are held on evenings from 6:00pm - 9:15pm.

Students are expected to allocate 10-15 hours of study time per subject each week to prepare for classes, working in groups and completing assessments.

Can I specialise in a particular area?

There is no formal specialisation in the Part-time MBA program.

The Part-time MBA program is a generalist degree. However, students may choose to specialise in a particular area with a choice of elective subjects.

The School offers a wide range of electives in Finance, Marketing, Strategy, Operations and Organisational Behaviours.

What is the teaching methodology?

The MBA teaching methodology is mostly case-based studies. Students are expected to integrate the learning and apply it to solve real business problems.

Are there opportunities for experiential learning?

Yes, some electives provide experiential learning opportunities, such as Innovation and BioDesign. In these subjects, students will learn how to conceptualise and articulate a coherent strategic, marketing and financial plan for an innovation, clearly and concisely communicate the ideas on how to manage and commercialise an innovation. Can I tailor my Part-time MBA?

Yes, we offer a wide range of elective subjects. You can tailor your elective choices, after completing all core units, as per your interest and career goals.

Which is better for me, a Graduate Diploma, Graduate Certificate or a Professional Certificate?

It depends on your career goals and the level of time commitment you’re willing to make. Professional and Graduate Certificates are ideal for quick upskilling, while a Graduate Diploma suits those seeking deeper professional development.

The Graduate Diploma in Business Administration can also lead directly to completion of the MBA. Students who complete a Professional Certificate or Graduate Certificate can reapply to progress into the Graduate Diploma or Part-time MBA.

Importantly, the MBA is designed with flexibility in mind - students can choose to exit early with a Professional Certificate, Graduate Certificate, or Graduate Diploma once they have completed the required subjects for those qualifications.

What is the difference between a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration and an MBA?

The Graduate Diploma in Business Administration includes all the compulsory subjects in the MBA course.

It provides students with a solid foundation across key business areas from Managing People to Finance.

Building upon these compulsory subjects, the MBA course allows students to further develop the knowledge and skills in some specialised elective subjects so that they can apply what they’ve learned in the core subjects in areas that they wish to specialise in.

What is the difference between a Graduate Certificate in Business Administration and an MBA?

A Graduate Certificate in Business Administration is a short postgraduate qualification focused on a specific area of study and typically takes 6–12 months to complete.

A Part-time MBA is a full masters degree covering key areas of business, strategy and leadership. An Part-time MBA usually takes 2 to 3 years to complete part-time.

Fee payment schedule is decided by the University of Melbourne. Typically, students are required to pay their tuition fee about 8 weeks before the subject commencement date.

What financial aid options are available?

Can I be awarded more than one scholarship?

No. scholarships are generally not cumulated.

    How important is my undergraduate GPA?

    The undergraduate GPA is important. However, this is not the only factor that the admission committee considers. The Committee also reviews your work experience, leadership, and personal achievements. If your undergraduate GPA is not strong, an explanation of your undergraduate performance and how you have progressed and developed academically and professionally since your graduation will be beneficial.

    Are there opportunities for internships during the program?

    No, internships are not offered as part of the Part-time MBA, however, there are a number of experiential electives available in the Part-time program.

    How does the program support entrepreneurship aspirations?

    There are opportunities in the elective subjects Innovation and BioDesign. In these subjects, students will learn how to conceptualise and articulate a coherent strategic, marketing and financial plan for an innovation, clearly and concisely communicate the ideas on how to manage and commercialise an innovation.

    Are there student clubs and organisations?

    Yes, the School has a Student Representative Council with student-led clubs ranging from consulting, entrepreneurship, women and leadership, to sporting and social clubs. There are extra-curricular opportunities available, ranging from case competitions, debate, to soccer games between faculty and students.

    Are there opportunities for leadership development?

    Yes, the curriculum includes topics for you to develop and demonstrate your leadership skills. Each subject has a syndicate project where you also apply leadership knowledge and skills to show self-leadership and peer leadership. This syndicate experience also provides you with the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally.

    How diverse is the student body?

    Diversity is a key feature of the MBS MBA and the Part-time MBA student cohort is highly diverse and experienced. On average, students are around 32 years old with approximately 10 years of work experience. The program brings together a broad mix of backgrounds, with students representing 63 nationalities. Around 37% of the cohort are women, contributing to a balanced and inclusive learning environment.

    How are groups and teams structured?

    Syndicate groups are assigned for each subject. You will be working with different students each module/term to build and extend your network. To ensure there is a balanced and diversed work group to maximise your learnings from your peers, your industry background, academic background and personal background are considered when determining group allocation.

    What is the policy on class attendance?

    As a Part-time MBA student, you are expected to attend at least 80% of classes in person. In-person classes offer better engagement, networking opportunities, and the ability to participate fully in discussions. Many students noted that they absorb material better in person due to fewer distractions and the richer interaction that in-person classes provide. The social aspect, such as building relationships during breaks and after class, was also frequently mentioned as a significant benefit.

    Are there opportunities to study abroad?

    Yes, the School offers an exchange program. Students can choose to exchange at our partner schools. The School currently has exchange partnership agreements with 52 institutions across 23 countries or regions.

    How much time should I dedicate to MBA course work each week?

    You may have 1-2 lectures in a week, depending on how you pace your studies. Depending on the subject, optional tutorial sessions are usually held on weekends. Outside the classroom hours, you will spend time working with your syndicate group on syndicate projects and other extra-curricular activities. Generally, you can expect to spend 10-15 hours per subject, per week.

    I'm interested in developing my career in sustainability. Are there any opportunities for participation in the Sustainable Value Creation Institute's activities?

    Sustainability is built into our curriculum. There is an elective Managing Sustainability for Strategic Advantage available in the Part-time MBA program. The Sustainable Value Creation Institute organises seminars, networking events and short courses. Our Part-time MBA students are welcome to attend these activities and explore other opportunities that may available.

    I'm interested in data analytics and AI. Are there any opportunities for participation in the Institute for Digital Innovation & AI?

    Data Analytics and AI is built into our curriculum. We have multiple Data Analytics and AI electives available in the Part-time MBA program. The Institute for Digital Innovation & AI organises seminars, networking events and short courses. Our Part-time MBA students are welcome to attend these activities and explore other opportunities that may available.

    I'm interested in social purpose iniatives. Are there any opportunities for participation in the Centre for Social Purpose Organisation's activities?

    Social purpose is built into our curriculum. We have multiple social purpose electives available in the Part-time MBA program. The Centre for Social Purpose Organisation organises seminars, networking events and short courses. Our Part-time MBA students are welcome to attend these activities and explore other opportunities that may available.

    What is a typical day of an Part-time MBA student like at Melbourne Business School?

    Students often have 1-2 classes each week, depending on how they pace their studies. Classes are usually held Monday to Friday, starting at around 6:00pm and finishing around 9:00pm. Some electives are held over weekends. Students also have assignments and group projects and extra-curricular activities. When you are eligible to enrol in elective subjects, each student has their own academic schedule depending on the electives he or she has chosen, with the same amount of assignments and group work.
