Newest QS rankings show the strength of our teaching

The University of Melbourne has been ranked in the top 50 globally across all five broad subject areas in the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

The University of Melbourne has been ranked in the top 50 globally across all five broad subject areas in the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

This includes ranking 27th in Social Sciences and Management, which incorporates many of Melbourne Business School’s disciplines including business and management studies, economics and econometrics, finance and marketing.

The University also ranked 15th in the world in the Life Sciences and Medicine subject area and jumped eight places in the Natural Sciences subject area to enter the top 50 at 49th.

Melbourne Business School Dean, Professor Jenny George said the newest rankings reflected the School’s vision of being among the top-ranked providers of business education, globally. 

“To be ranked so highly across all subject areas is indicative of the strength of our faculty and underscores why Melbourne Business School continues to be the top ranked MBA in Australia,” Professor George said. 

“It is because of our academic rigour, and leadership in academic and business research, that we are also the first choice for clients and corporations pursuing executive education.”

The University is also ranked in the top 100 globally for all its 52 narrow subject areas, with 42 - the highest number of subjects for an Australian university - ranked in the top 50, demonstrating the hallmark breadth and depth of the Melbourne curriculum.

University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor Professor Emma Johnston said these rankings are a key benchmark for academic excellence worldwide.

The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) rankings evaluate universities across the specific academic disciplines of Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management, and the individual subjects within these disciplines.

Institutions are assessed on several indicators, including academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact.

The University of Melbourne is the only Australian university to have ranked in the top 50 in all broad subject areas in 2025.
