Generous class gift does social good
The generosity of Melbourne Business School’s MBA Class of 2006 will see two current students undertake highly-sought after internships with Australia’s leading ‘for purpose’ advisory firm.
In consultation with key class volunteers, the 2006 MBA cohort have disbursed funds of almost $10,000 towards two internships for full-time MBA students with Social Ventures Australia (SVA).
SVA tackles social challenges via strategic consulting, social impact investment, and venture philanthropy. The beneficiaries of this class gift are Nakul Maheshwari (MBA 2016) and Dan Code (MBA 2016).
SVA was formed in 2002 by The Benevolent Society, The Smith Family, Work Ventures and AMP Foundation. Since 2009, SVA have employed one or more Melbourne Business School MBA students a year for a three-month internship, partially funded by the School.
MBS Career Management Centre Associate Director David Tan said the internships were a “premium opportunity” because, as well as the reward of creating social impact, students worked closely with expert consultants and real clients.
“It’s important for a business school to work in this sector, and SVA provides MBS this opportunity,” David said.
“The internship experience is invaluable for our people – it looks great on their CV and is excellent experience to sell to the market.”
Nakul is currently with SVA evaluating the feasibility of initiatives to reduce long-term unemployment, conducting competitive analysis for a higher education provider, and researching the supply and demand of student housing in Melbourne. Dan, who worked at a clean energy organisation in Tanzania before undertaking his MBA, will begin his internship at the end of June.
MBS Executive Director of Advancement Carson Walburn said the School was especially grateful for class gift income because organising a group of peers to give to a cause took special commitment and effort.
