Our Purpose
We unleash ideas and leaders for a sustainable future.
This purpose informs how we teach emerging leaders, who measure success by the impact they have on the people around them and the broader community.
Our hope is that these leaders will create and protect economic growth, social equality, shared prosperity and environmental resources for the benefit of all.
We turn to this purpose, as well as our Guiding Principles, when making important decisions about how we do business.
Built By Business, For Business
The School emerged directly from Melbourne’s business community, driven by a shared belief that Australia needed rigorous, dedicated business education.
We started with a residential general management program. Then, in partnership with the University of Melbourne, we launched Australia’s first MBA in 1963. Two years later, our first cohort graduated - ready to lead, not just participate.
That close connection to industry hasn’t faded. It’s deepened. Today, our donor members - leaders from business and philanthropy - hold a majority stake in the School, with the University of Melbourne as our academic partner.
It’s a deliberate model, and a powerful one. It gives us real independence. It keeps us accountable to evidence, insight, and the realities of leadership. And it ensures our governance is shaped by the world our graduates step into - so what we teach never drifts from what matters.

The Group makes recommendations, provides critique and imparts current knowledge to increase the confidence of the school’s decision makers.

We work with industry leaders to shape what business education becomes next.
Through our Executives-in-Residence Program, leading practitioners step into the School to share real-world insight with our students, faculty and partners. They teach, contribute to research, and engage with our community, bringing current business practice into learning.
Drawn from the public, private and not-for-profit sectors, our Executives-in-Residence ensure our thinking stays current and our learning stays relevant. In turn, they help influence and develop Australia’s next generation of leaders by connecting academic rigour with the realities of leadership in action.

Our degree programs aren't just the best in Australia – they're also the most practical.
We teach our students to excel as individuals as well as work effectively in teams, so they're prepared for the demands and challenges of being a workplace leader.
Students also undertake industry placements at companies like L'Oreal and Jetstar during their studies, where they learn to apply classroom knowledge and theory to real-world projects that achieve results.
