Providing a spark at AGL: Part-time MBA graduate gets promoted 3 levels at leading energy company

Are you someone who aspires to hold a Senior Manager role in a large organisation? If you are, then Part-time MBA graduate Milena Gursztyn (MBA 2014) can relate. Milena decided that in order to obtain her dream job, she would have to enrol in the Melbourne Business School MBA program, a decision that turned out to be the perfect choice.

Prior to undertaking her MBA, Milena was working at AGL, one of Australia’s leading energy companies with over 3000 employees. Milena found herself in a large organisation with potential for internal promotion opportunities, however, to move into a more senior role, Milena recognised she needed something to separate her from the many others with the same aspirations. “The MBA was a perfect choice to solidify my experience and establish a foundation to obtain my dream job. I completed the course as a part-timer, as I didn’t want to take any time out of the workforce.”

Milena soon found out that one of the best aspects of undertaking the Part-time MBA was being able to apply everything she learnt in class to her job, “I was able to recommend superior solutions than my peers to various problems within the organisation. My MBA enriched my understanding of the bigger picture and I felt confident in participating in projects which were beyond my reach previously.”

After the completion of her MBA and with the support of the Careers Team at MBS, Milena had the confidence to put her hand up for a role within the newly formed Organisational Transformation Team at AGL, reporting directly to a member of the Executive Leadership Team. “I now oversee projects aiming to transform the company across all functions and portfolios and I am directly contributing to the key strategic objectives set by our new CEO.” The promotion moved Milena up 3 levels within the company’s hierarchy.

With her MBA now completed and with a management position to her name that she coveted, Milena says that the Melbourne Business School MBA provided her with a lot more than the teachings learnt in class, “It opened a whole new world to me. The network I acquired within 2 years is larger than the network I built through my 8 years of work experience. Aside from the professional exposure, I made multiple amazing friends who I will have in my life forever.”
