London Business School's Rajesh Chandy to deliver Charles Goode Oration

30/10/2018
Melbourne Business School will host one of the world's most respected experts on innovation and social impact to present the Charles Goode Oration next month.

Professor Rajesh Chandy, the Academic Director of the Wheeler Institute for Business and Development at London Business School, will use the public lecture to argue that business leaders in wealthy nations can learn from the smallest entrepreneurs and least-privileged customers in emerging markets.

The speech on November 13 will draw on Professor Chandy's recent projects studying the impact of business skills among micro-entrepreneurs in South Africa, property rights in slums in Egypt, novel financing approaches in Ghana and innovation among farmers in India.

Professor Ujwal Kayande, Associate Dean, Academic at Melbourne Business School, said Professor Chandy was renowned for his pioneering research.

"He's done things quite differently to how most people would. Most business scholars tend to study big, listed companies, because the data are already available," Professor Kayande said.

"Rajesh and his students have gone out into the street to study real-life small businesses, like butchers and bakers, and they've done incredibly clever experiments with them.

"It's really rigorous and relevant work that has a real impact on the world, for the people that need it most."

The Wheeler Institute was established by the founders of Lonely Planet, Tony and Maureen Wheeler, to use business insights to address the world’s most pressing economic, social and physical challenges.

The Charles Goode Oration is an annual guest lecture hosted by Melbourne Business School in recognition of the work of businessman and philanthropist Charles Goode AC, former chairman of ANZ, Woodside Petroleum and the Ian Potter Foundation.

Mr Goode has served a long list of organisations in the areas of health, medical research and the arts in addition to his corporate positions, including the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute, Austin Hospital, Australian Ballet School and the State Library of Victoria.

The event is a highlight of the annual Melbourne Business School calendar and attracts many top business leaders from Victoria.
