Project Management Fundamentals

Strengthen your ability to oversee assignments through our Project Management Fundamentals program.

Together, we examine the key principles of project management and how they help to ensure projects are completed within their expected time, budget and scope. Ideal for those without formal training in supervising tasks, this program also provides a combination of tools, techniques and people-related examples to help you do so, effectively. 

You can undertake this program in an assessed mode, leading to an accredited Specialist Certificate from the University of Melbourne. Learn more.

  • Managers involved with leading projects of various types, complexities and sizes, within a range of industry sectors
  • Managers providing services of various types (e.g., HR, finance, IT, purchasing) to those that lead projects
  • Managers from other functional areas who plan to embark on a career in project management.

A study guide with readings and cases is provided before the workshop commences.


Onsite program delivery will commence at 8:30am on day 1 of the program and conclude at approximately 5:00pm on the final day.

  • Using practical tools and techniques for planning and executing projects
  • Monitoring the progress of projects
  • Closing projects
  • Appropriate project management software
  • Human resource and people-related issues.

Dr Prakash Singh
Program Director | Project Management Fundamentals

Prakash is Professor of Operations Management and Head of Department of Management and Marketing at the University of Melbourne. He is a professional engineer and has extensive personal experience of managing projects over many years. He has also advised many organizations on various aspects of planning and delivering projects of various types, size and complexity. He has considerable experience in teaching project management and related courses to executives and managers from a range of industry sectors.

Specialist Certificate pathway

Our Specialist Certificates are designed to be practical and relevant to industry professionals, and provides the flexibility to tailor your course to your specific developmental needs. 

By undertaking a select range of open programs in an assessed mode, you will graduate with an accredited qualification from the University of Melbourne.
This open program can be undertaken as part of the following Specialist Certificate offerings:

Specialist Certificate in Leadership (Professional Services)
Specialist Certificate in Strategic Marketing.


  • A 250-word reflective diary, due at the end of the workshop (worth 10%)
  • A 2000-word essay, due three weeks after the workshop ends (worth 80%)
  • A 250-word executive summary, due four weeks after the workshop ends (worth 10%)


The program fee is A$3,000 and GST exempt when undertaken in an assessed mode.
