Henry hits the right note with his MBA

After six years as a freelance opera singer in the UK and Europe, Henry Manning felt he needed a more secure future. He soon realised that following a similar path to his father and completing an MBA early in his career could open greater opportunities for him.

With his partner hailing from highly liveable Melbourne, Henry felt studying abroad might be a good way to start his journey. He contacted Melbourne Business School, whose offer of a scholarship and personal career support convinced him he was on the right track.

Scholarship support

With a Master of Economic History from the University of Edinburgh, a postgraduate singing qualification from London’s Royal Academy of Music already under his belt, and the prospect of living like a character from Puccini’s opera La bohème, the scholarship support was a big factor in his decision.

As part of his studies, Henry and his cohort met business leaders from the Asia–Pacific region. Their insights allowed him to have greater impact on an internship at Guide Dogs Victoria, Australia’s most trusted charity, where he helped identify a business model for a $20 million re-development project.

“It was a very interesting project and an invaluable experience because we had the chance to apply different lessons from accounting, operations, finance, strategy and marketing,” Henry says.

Just before his internship, Henry landed a role at the boutique general management consultancy SPP in Melbourne – where he is looking forward to building business in the media and entertainment sector. It was a happy outcome to conversations with SPP that Henry started many months earlier.

New networks

Henry says leaving his friends and family behind in London was the hardest part of his decision to study on the other side of the world, but he was always confident of the opportunities that the move would bring.

Henry now has a new network of family and friends thanks to his partner and his cohort, who, like him, come from all parts of the world. For Henry, Melbourne is the perfect choice to develop his career before contemplating a return to London. “Melbourne is easy to get around, has great food, good weather and is a very nice place to be. I highly recommend the School to anyone committed enough to study an MBA. The work is rewarding, the people surrounding you are supportive and the conversations with the diverse range of people in my cohort was always fascinating.”
