Ciara unearths new opportunities at MBS

Dublin-born Civil Engineer Ciara O’Sullivan sweated her way through the Pilbara heat in Western Australia for five years before deciding she needed to broaden her career options.

While her career in mining operations was going well, she felt an MBA would open fresh opportunities and started looking for the right school.

“Melbourne Business School has an outstanding reputation and appealed to me instantly,” Ciara said. “It’s globally regarded, has world-class faculty, an outstanding alumni network and, of course, is based in beautiful Melbourne, the best city in the world.”

Ciara was nervous about switching industries, but the School’s Careers team put her in touch with business leaders and alumni, which led to a meeting with members of Accenture’s Melbourne office.

After completing her 12-month MBA, Ciara landed at Accenture back in Dublin in a Management Consultant role that draws on her resource sector experience. She credits her MBA with giving her the ability to deliver a string of projects successfully in the areas of systems implementation, corporate strategy and program management.

“The MBA enabled me to hit the ground running,” Ciara said. “The subjects I studied – from accounting and finance to strategy and marketing – gave me a foundation from which to work and a language that I’ll take with me in my consulting work into the future.”

Back in Dublin, Ciara and her husband are also starting a fitness studio to “bring a little bit of Australia back to Ireland in the form of F45, the Australian business franchise.” Ciara is using the knowledge, entrepreneurial focus and confidence she gained from her MBA to take this bold step.

Ciara said three things stand out about her MBA experience – the life-long friends she has made and keeps in touch with, the outstanding faculty, especially in microeconomics, brand management and corporate finance, and the self-awareness and skills she now has to deal with leadership, team work, public speaking and all challenges.

“Melbourne Business School is a great opportunity to develop non-academic skills in a safe environment. I highly recommend it. With a range of options now in front of me and the foundation to accelerate to wherever I want to be, I’m very proud to be a part of the MBS community.”

Ciara’s only regret is leaving Melbourne.

“The School’s Admissions team were exceptional and made me feel welcome straight away. And Melbourne is such a welcoming city and easy place to live. There is always a food festival, sporting event or concert to keep you entertained – during the little free time you have.”
