This exciting opportunity requires a motivated and collaborative Research Fellow possessing a PhD in behavioural economics, marketing or consumer psychology and strong applied research skills with expertise in extracting data from existing materials and the collection of new data through various methodologies. The Fellowship is tied to a 3-year research initiative focused on improving the retirement outcomes for Australians by optimising their income and financial security in retirement. You will investigate the value of lifetime pensions, annuities and other forms of optimising income and financial security in retirement. It will identify and work with key members within the retirement ecosystem that will encourage and assist retirees in Australia to take control of their retirement future in order to optimise their lifestyle post-retirement for however long they live. It will test the effectiveness of existing and new ways to reach, educate, engage and influence the attitudes and behaviours of retirees related to retirement planning. 

This research project is supported by a philanthropic gift from the David Orford Foundation and the successful candidate will work collaboratively with a cross-disciplinary research team of Melbourne Business School Faculty and industry practitioners. 

Key outcomes of the research: 
  • Establishing the state of existing knowledge on pensions, annuities and other forms of optimising income and financial security in retirement;
  • Understanding the attitudes and behaviours of key members of the retirement ecosystem – starting with financial planners, followed by other influential members and then consumers;
  • Identifying and testing the effectiveness of the relevant mechanisms to reach, educate, engage and influence consumers; and
  • Providing a range of recommendations that will help consumers to optimise their retirement income and financial security and that can be implemented by members of the retirement ecosystem;
  • Having this research published in relevant, leading academic journals. 

Key responsibilities: 
  • Conducting research, which includes survey design and administration, qualitative interviews, focus groups and field and lab experiments; 
  • Producing and disseminating working papers, industry reports and presentations based on the research;
  • Undertaking policy and engaged research activities (convening roundtable discussions, presentations, meeting with key stakeholders, etc.);
  • Preparation of manuscripts for future publication in peer-reviewed academic journals; and
  • Demonstrating the ability to lead a team on an academic and engaged research project.   
   
Selection Criteria: 
  • Successful completion of a PhD in a field related to behavioural economics, consumer psychology or marketing.
  • Highly developed skills in conducting engaged research and in the manipulation and quantitative analysis of data;
  • Extensive experience with the use of statistical and/or qualitative data software packages;
  • An ability to conduct independent research, be proactive, and assume responsibility for the development and completion of research papers;
  • An ability and willingness to work collaboratively in teams to ensure successful project outcomes;
  • A demonstrable track record in written and oral communication skills;
  • An interest in policy-relevant research and the dissemination of research to non-academic audiences; 
  • A demonstrated ability to present research findings to a wide range of audiences;
  • Ability to work effectively with external stakeholders in government, business and community sectors.
